Unburied

I have returned to a place I have stood many times before
The wind brushes the back of my neck
Blowing wavy hair over the sides of my shoulder
Into the autumn breeze
Looking before me is a series of my own mistakes
I used to stand here and feel the dirt underneath my feet
Decades of history vibrate beneath the surface,
Holding me to the earth
Everything I used to feel
And all I cared about, is now buried in the hills
My own memories tainted with rose-colored nostalgia
Lies as sharp as thorns have ripped away at my skin
Shredding me down to solid bone
Exposed, raw, empty
